Coach Named Bo

What does "The Game" mean to you? In this part of the country, it can only mean one thing. It is Michigan – Ohio State week. This year’s game goes up a monumental level as the #2 Michigan Wolverines travel to Columbus Ohio to face the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes team.

Now don’t get me wrong, but Ohio and Michigan share a border and have been at odds since 1835 when the two states fought a war over a stretch of land 6 miles wide at the bottom of Michigan. The state of Ohio and Michigan were disputing the teritory of Toledo. It was known as the Toledo War. Ever since Ohio did not relingish Toledo to Michigan, the two states have been at each other.

This war carried on in different forms until 1968 when Ohio State beat Michigan mercilessly, 50-14 on the football battlefield. At the end of that game, Woody Hayes went for two after scoring a touchdown. He was later asked why he went for two, he responded "… because I couldn't go for three."

The embarrassment of that outcome set the stage for the 1969 rematch. Michigan that year hired a former Ohio State assistant coach named Glenn Edward Schembechler. Glenn, better known as Bo, took his underdog Michigan team onto the battlefield against the No. 1 ranked Ohio State University. The defending national champions were riding a 22 game win streak, and OSU was a 17-point favorite over Michigan. However, on that day Michigan out played OSU and Bo out coached Woody. Bo was named Coach or the Year that year and so the greatest rivalry was rekindled in what has been known as the "Ten Year War."

Sadly to say, this year Bo will be sitting next to Woody looking down from that great football field in the sky. Many Wolverine fans will hope that Michigan can just win one for Bo so that he can hear Hail to the Victors from heaven.

Is Zotime Contagious?

I think I’ve finally infected my wife. Yesterday, we had a wedding to go to and my wife was running so late that we didn’t make the wedding on time. It’s no big deal as we just sat outside the church for the wedding to end and mingled into the reception with everyone else.

Now, I’ve been accused of being fashionably late all of my life, and I’m glad that my wife is finally seeing the benefits of showing up late to things.

The wedding, if you need to know was somewhat unusual for this part of the world. There were several men dressed up in skirts. Sure, they called them kilts, but I knew different.
