Top High Schools Announced

Newsweek revealed the latest installment of the nations Top High Schools. It’s good to see that our local high school made the list again. The criterion that was used to determine the list is a simple ratio of the number of advanced placement test taken by the juniors and seniors divided by the number of graduating seniors. The only schools that make the list are the ones that have at least a 1.00 for this ratio.

On a sad note, only 1300 schools made the list out of the 27,000 public high schools. Just under 5%. I'm amazed every day by our continuing under performing public education system.

How long will it last?

Man Cave

When my grandfather was a young man he worked a section of land that belonged to my great grandfather. Eventually he was given a chunk of this land and built a house from the large boulders that where on his land. He married a local woman and they had several children. He worked the land all day long and when he came home from the farm he would be treated like the king. He was the King of his Castle. My father grew up in this household and when he was old enough to move away he did. He married and moved to a new city. Eventually he settled down and raised a family. Every day he would come home and his wife would be waiting for him. She would grab his lunchbox and coat and he would sit down in his favorite chair and watch TV while his wife cooked dinner… He was the King of his Castle.

I grew up watching my dad be the King and I always thought that I would just follow him. When I got married I also eventually bought a house and that is when the King was dethroned. What I thought was my Castle turned out to be more in line of our house and the only private area I had was a little corner of the bedroom where my nightstand stood. Even that would sometime have “stuff” that belonged to my wife and kids. What went so wrong and where did I make an incorrect turn? I was in need of my Castle but where would I find it?

The solution came to me when we decided to redo our basement. This dungeon was a dark and dank space that contained the mechanical systems for our castle. It contained a mismatch of furniture within the small spaces. To me, the basement was heaven and would be a perfect place for me to rule my kingdom from. It would be adorned with my possessions and treasures that I acquired.

So, this series of blog entries is going to cover what a Man Cave is and how you too could have one.
