Is This Honor?

In Basra Iraq, the term Honor Killing has become prevalent again. It is when a woman is murdered because she has caused dishonor to the family name. I remember a few years ago when the same kind of behavior occurred in a nearby city. The father murdered his daughter because she brought shame to the family. He skipped the country and I'm not sure if he was ever caught by the police. This kind of behavior according to the news report has become more prevalent since last year.

I'm not sure what is more unbelievable, that someone would actually want to kill someone because they had somehow dishonored their family name, or that it only costs $100 dollars to hire a hit man in Iraq, or that only 5 of 81 honor killings have been convicted this year in Iraq.

You've would have thought that with the removal of the Hussein regime that this kind of behavior would have been stemmed. Apparently not. It just goes to show you how much different our world is.

In the US, this kind of behaviour would have brought shame to the family, but in Iraq, this kind of behavior gets congratulated by the police for handing out religious justice.

Thanksgiving

We had the whole family at our celebration of Thanksgiving again this year. It is a great time to enjoy friends and family as we sit around the table and share with each other what we are thankful for.

This year, one of us had an extra special reason to be thankful. Needless to say, it was a joyous day and fun was had by all. BTW, Feman took more of Eduardo's money at the usual poker game that just seems to break out after eating.

Irony

Man O' War is arguably the greates horse ever to race. He only raced as a two and three year old, but during his racing career, his record was 20-1. He did not win the triple crown as a three year old as his trainer did not not want his horse to run that long of a race that early in the season. Furthermore, the Triple Crown was only in the second year and was not going to be renowned for another ten years.

At the end of his third year "Big Red" as he was also known ran a match race against the first triple crown winner, Sir Barton. This is where I'm going to interject the first bit of useless knowledge. The race was at Kenilworth Park in Windsor Ontario. Man O' War won by seven lengths as he was slowing down at the end.

The second portion of the useless knowledge is that Man O' War's only loss came as a two year old to a horse named Upset.

PPTPW

That's the acronym for Itchy's basketball team. After not even wanting to try out for the team this year, Itchy made the high school team. They have a very talented and deep team that I'm sure they will win more then they will loose so long as the team remembers the acronym.

PPTPW = Player Play, Tough Players Win

Arkham Horror Night

This past weekend we played a game that most of you may never of herd of. Arkham Horror is a complex board game based on the H. P. Lovecraft books. The game is different because it’s not based on a single player or even team approach. This game is a cooperative game of all players against the game. In the game each players draws an investigator who must avoid or fight alien creatures that enter the fiction city of Arkham through gates that spring up throughout the city. Then the player (if they so choose) enter the gates themselves, survive the alien places beyond, return to Arkham, and close the gates. One way to win the game is to close six gates.

This past weekend we had the unfortunate accident of awakening the Ancient One early as we could not close gates fast enough. In the end, Nylarthotep woke up and we were face to face with it. We lost two of our investigators as they were devoured by the Ancient One, but in the end we killed it using a variety of weapons including a few flame throwers and a shotgun and brought sanity back to the sweet little hovel of Arkham.

The game is a long one so if you've got a whole night to devote to a game, give this one a try as it's nothing like any other game you've played. If you want to learn more about the game, watch the attached video of a good explanation of about Arkham Horror.

Music Monday - Paramore

Paramore - crushcrushcrush

Paramore is a new group headed lead singer Hayley Williams and includes Josh Farro on guitar, Jeremy Davis on bass, and Zac Farro on drums. They are a fairly new band that was formed in 2004 and released their debut album in 2005. Their second albom Riot! was released in 2007 and their first single off the album is crushcrushcrush.

They have a punk sound, but it is early in their career so we will need to see where their sound leads them to. Their single is a power pop song with a driving drum beat.

I got a lot to say to you
Yeah, I got a lot to say
I noticed your eyes are always glued to me
Keeping them here
And it makes no sense at all

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Crush
Crush
Crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four!)

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two I was just counting on
That never happened
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than this

If you want to play it like a game
Well, come on, come on, let's play
Cause I'd rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies

Crush
Crush
Crush
Crush, crush
(Two, three, four!)

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two I was just counting on
That never happened
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than this now

Rock and roll, baby
Don't you know that we're all alone now?
I need something to sing about
Rock and roll, hey
Don't you know, baby, we're all alone now?
I need something to sing about
Rock and roll, hey
Don't you know, baby, we're all alone now?
Give me something to sing about

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two I was just counting on
That never happened
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than
No, oh

Nothing compares to a quiet evening alone
Just the one, two I was just counting on
That never happened
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than
More than this
